Ravetch and Frank accompanied Ritt and Newman through preproduction, casting, and promotion design. Ritt asked that the housemaid character (initially Halmea, a black lady) be relabelled Alma and played by a white actress, since he believed a relationship between Hud and a black woman would not work. According to Ravetch and Frank, "Neither American Western film nor American society was rather all set for that at that time".
